The Panama Papers

A brief overview of the Panama Papers. We'll talk about how it can affect your business and what you can do to prevent data breaches like it.

What are the Panama Papers?

It’s been confirmed that over 2TB of data has been leaked from the Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca. This is one of the biggest data leaks in history. It contains over 11.5 million documents that could implicate leaders all over the world. Edward Snowden tweeted “Biggest leak in the history of data journalism just went live, and it's about corruption.” You can find out all the information you want about The Panama Papers here: http://panamapapers.sueddeutsche.de/en/

What does this mean for my business?

There may be several implications for U.S. citizens and businesses when that data is speculated to be published Wednesday. This is a stark reminder that insider threats aren’t something to sweep aside. In fact, we wrote an article about Detecting Insider Threats Using Honeytokens nearly a month ago. The security of your business network, data, website, etc. is of utmost importance in preventing data breaches. Mossack Fonseca did claim it suffered a successful, but limited hack. It’s also a reminder that using encryption is essential to preventing important data getting into the wrong hands.

What can my business do to help thwart hackers?

Your business should have a Network Security Audit performed to find any weaknesses. Most hackers target smaller businesses because they don’t focus on security as much as large corporations. There are plenty of affordable solutions to help keep your business safe. CloudFlare provides several security options including DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack mitigation and offers a WAF (Web Application Firewall) for a mere $20.00 per month. That’s a small price to pay for peace of mind. Give us a call today at 918-544-2500 for a free consultation.

Final Word

As the Panama Papers slowly unravel and media outlets start posting more articles, we’ll see some pretty powerful leaders around the world pay the price for the Mossack Fonseca data leak. It’s never too late to start implementing security, encryption, employee training, disaster recovery plans, and several other things that could keep your business from ending up in the news and your business data in the wrong hands.
